The Strand was a treasure in the early 1980s but later ruined by upscaling to five-star status. A neat smaller operation is the Windermere Inn on Thanlmin Road in the Kamayut Township. Very reasonable - about $35/40, including a good breakfast. Taxis available to downtown.
If this is your first trip to Burma consider making arrangements through the Diethelm Travel Agency at 140/1 Wireless Road in Bangkok. They were first in the market and have the best rapport with the Burmese. You'll avoid the hassel of waiting, paperwork and delay to get a visa from the Burmese Embassy at 132 Sathorn Nua Road as Diethelm will have your passport stamped in 24 Hours.
Nor is it necessary to take a Diethelm tour - ask for an IFT category -means Independent Foreign Tourist. Just buy the ticket (I'd fly Thai) and book the hotel. Wanpen was in charge of the "Burma Desk" on my last trip. Office was located at the street level. Check www.diethelm-travel.com for e-mail address.
