Places of Interest

Stone Carvings from Ramayana Epic

Wat Khong near Kapong (south of Takua Pa) is believed to have been the site of the ancient town of Takua Pa, and fine stone carvings of the God Narayana, King Laksha and Queen Sita of the Ramayana Epic can be seen. They are the oldest works of art found in Phang Nga Province and it is presumed that Kaling Kharat tribal people who once lived along the Indian Ocean coast made the carvings.

Ancient Town of Ban Thung

There are several ruins left in the area presumed to be the remnants of the first town constructed by ancient Indian settlers to the region. The ruins are near Ko Kho Khao, 15km (9mi) from Khura Buri. Khura Buri is a small town, some 40km (25mi) north of Takua Pa.

Surin Marine National Park

The islands’ most attractive features are long, beautiful beaches with smooth, white sand, lines of perfect shallow water coral reefs, and its inhabitants, the sea Gypsies. Surin Marine National Park, in the Andaman Sea and under the administration of Khura Buri, covers an area of approximately 135sqkm (52sqmi). To reach the park, the most convenient and fastest way is by boat from Ban Hun Lad near Khura Buri (4-5hrs). The most suitable time to visit the park is from December to March. The National Park Division, Forestry Department provides bungalows; reservations can be made under Bkk Tel 579-0529, 579-4842.
