South Thailand / Kanchanadit

Kanchanadit is a small town in Surat Thani Province, about 15km (9mi) east of Surat Thani city.

Places of Interest

Monkey Training Center

The Monkey School is located along the Surat Thani - Kanchanadit Road, Highway 401, some 2km before reaching Kanchanadit. Most students, are pig-tailed monkeys captured from the forests. Training usually takes some 3 months. The monkeys are trained to pick coconuts. They literally work for peanuts and so far there have been no labor disputes. At the center, one can observe the process by which the monkeys learn.

Oyster Farms

Oyster Farms are found around the estuaries of the Ka Dae and Tha Thong rivers over an area of 640 hectares (1,600 acres). Oysters bred there are said to be substantially larger than those found elsewhere in Thai waters. Those interested in visiting the farms and observing oysters being harvested may hire long-tailed boats which carry 8 to 10 persons. It takes some 30 minutes to reach the farms from Tha Thong quay. The boat hire costs around 100 Baht per person.
