South Thailand / Yala

Yala, 1,084km (678mi) from Bangkok, is the capital of the southernmost province of Thailand, as always named identical with the provincial capital. Its Betong District, bordering on Malaysia, is the southernmost district of the kingdom.

The economy of the town and the province depend heavily on rubber, such as the economy of neighboring Malaysia.

The total area of the province is 4,521sqkm (1,745sqmi). Politically it is divided into the six districts Muang (the town of Yala), Bannang Sata, Betong, Raman, Yaha, Than To.

The topography of Yala is forest covered mountains. Its forest stretch over 3,220sqkm (322,000 hectares, 805,000 acres). There are several rivers but the only important one is Pattani River having its origin in the mountains of Yala and flowing north.

As the province is just a few hundred kilometers from the equator, rain is possible year round although a publication of the Tourism Authority of Thailand claims "the rainy season lasts [only] nine months".
