Riau
Penyangat Island
This island, six kilometers from Tanjung Pinang, can be reached in 15 minutes by boat. The seat of
the powerful Bugis viceroys of Riau during 18th century, Penyangat still bears the traces of its
illustrations past. Ruins, abandoned for almost 70 years, were recently restored. The old ruler's
palace and royal tombs are among the legacies left by the Riau sultanate. Still in use is the old vice
royal mosque, the Mesjid Raya. There is also a newly built cultural center for stage performances
of Malay music and dance.
